Romeo et Juliette, Grange Park Opera

Stephano, cover in Gounod's Roméo et Juliette

With Grange Park Opera

Shakespeare's greatest romance is given the passionate embellishment of Gounod's music. Separated by a murderous feud between their families, Roméo and Juliette are impossibly in love. Walls close in, bodies pile up, and a rescue plan goes terminally wrong – though not before the closing duet which will ensure there is not a dry eye in the house.

About Grange Park Opera

In less than two decades, Grange Park Opera has established itself as one of Europe’s leading opera festivals.

In 2017 the company relocated to West Horsley Place, Surrey, and in eleven months built a five-storey opera house modelled on La Scala, Milan. The Times Arts Awards acknowledged the achievement as the “Fastest construction of an opera house in history”.

A demi-Eden of glowing brick façades, framed by antique box hedges and walled gardens, sit in the midst of a 300-acre estate slumbering in the Surrey countryside. Behind the 15th century house, an walled ancient orchard opens into a woodland:  the setting for our opera house – the Theatre in the Woods.

West Horsley Place was inherited in 2015 by author Bamber Gascoigne from his aunt Mary, Duchess of Roxburghe. He gifted the estate to the Mary Roxburghe Trust.

West Horsley Place, Grange Park Opera's new home in Surrey

“West Horsley Place is a glorious and sprawling ancient house, grand but welcoming, formal gardens with secret corners for picnickers and gazebos, a sense of history and occasion, a crinkle crankle wall extending the length of one garden and beyond into the orchard (too majestic to describe) and barns and outbuildings and aged trees and box hedges. What happens there will be a gift to lovers of opera, as well as the young audiences who will be attracted to all the other projects and events which will breathe new life into this demi–Eden.” - Joanna Lumley
